There are some really interesting facts for the wrestling fan to learn about the history of wrestling. Cave drawings from 3000 B.C. have shown us that wrestling may be the earliest sport known to man. The Olympics (around 700 B.C.) held the first otherwise known wrestling match. Aside from teaching strength and agility, wrestling is one of the most useful exercises around.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Study the ancient forms of wrestling throughout history. The Fila Wrestling website has some surprising information. Early soldiers used wrestling moves as a way to defend themselves during times of war.

  2. Step 2

Amaze yourself as you will find information on wrestling through the ages, beginning when it entered the Olympics arena in the 1890s. From there, the interest has exploded. Today, there are 203 countries participating in the Olympics.

  3. Step 3

“Pin" your opponent. This is the act of putting your foe on his back. From the time of early colonial settlers practicing their wrestling moves, this has been the object of the sport. Only the most traditional moves we now see have survived history.

  4. Step 4

Accumulate points through wrestling moves that include takedown, escape, reversal and near fall. Check out the West Virginia Wrestling website to get the detailed explanation on the way these moves help you to gain points. There are also negative points which will detract from your score.

  5. Step 5

Imagine how the rules for this sport came about. Parts of the current regulations came from the Fighting Irish teams and the oriental influence of Japanese Sumo wrestling. Other moves came from various cultures brought down through the ages. Weight and skill level determine the classifications.

  6. Step 6

Seek out local experts in wrestling clubs for a more "word of mouth" education on the history of wrestling. These experts have often lived through tough matches over the years and even performed many of the moves we consider "classic." The Worldwide Wrestling Federation began in 1963, so there are several people who know the facts.

Tips & Warnings
  • The real sport of wrestling is completely different from today's entertainment shows on television. The wrestling we see on late night TV often depends on sound effects and how much sentiment each wrestler can get from the audience.
  • Showing that wrestlers are more than entertainers, follow their careers after they leave wrestling. As an example, Jesse Ventura became governor of Minnesota.
  • Wrestling, like any sport, can cause injuries. Be cognizant of the fact that you must use correct moves and appropriate equipment, not to mention practice common sense.
