How to Spend a Day in Galway, Ireland

Galway lies on the banks of the River Corrib on the western coast of Ireland. While this bustling city is a mecca for culture and entertainment, it also serves as the gateway to some of Ireland's most beautiful locations such as the Aran Islands and Connemara. Of course, you would not want to just pass through Galway, as this city is too spectacular to miss.

1. Begin your tour of Galway in Eyre Square. Check out the statue of Padraic O'Conaire, one of Ireland's famous writers. Tour Kennedy park in the center of the square. Enjoy the modern Fountain at Eyre Square. Finally, visit the Browne Doorway located near the two cannons from the Crimean War.
2. Walk to the corner of Shop Street and Abbeygate Street where Lynch's Castle is located. This castle dates back to the early 16th century and is considered Ireland's finest representation of a town castle.
3. Venture into the Latin Quarter located on and around High Street. Stop in Kenny's Bookstore, which is an antiquarian bookshop and art gallery. Enjoy the unique shops which line the streets.
4. Tour the Collegiate Church of St. Nicholas located on Shop Street. This active church, dating back to 1320, is Galway's finest representation of medieval architecture. Notice the gargoyles and mermaids carved into the building's exterior.
5. Walk down High Street, which becomes Quay Street. Stop to eat and drink at The Quays, which is a well known pub and restaurant.
6. Travel a short distance to the Spanish Arch, built in 1584. There are remnants of the medieval walls constructed by the Normans in the 13th century. If time permits, visit The Galway City Museum located next to the Spanish Arch.
7. Walk over Wolfe Tone Bridge and down Claddagh Way to the Claddagh. The famous Claddagh ring gets its name from this small fishing community.
8. Cross back over Wolfe Tone Bridge and take the riverside path up the river to the Salmon Weir Bridge. Cross this bridge to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas.
