It is very important that you learn to safely wade in rocky streams, especially if you are a fly fisherman. Rocky streams can be very dangerous and having the proper wading techniques and gear can save you from being hurt or even killed.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wading staff
  • Footwear with cleats
  • Waders
  • Wading belt
  • Moisture wicking clothing
  1. Step 1

Use a solid wading staff whenever you are in a rocky stream. A solid staff is safer than the collapsible kind.

  2. Step 2

Choose footwear that has cleats and good ankle support.

  3. Step 3

Wear waders, a wading belt and moisture wicking clothing whenever you are wading.

  4. Step 4

Keep one foot on the ground at all times and never make aggressive or rapid movements while in the water.

  5. Step 5

Shuffle your feet as you walk on the rocky stream bed, keeping your front foot pointed toward the current.

  6. Step 6

Move in a slow diagonal direction when you wade downstream.

  7. Step 7

Avoid stepping on large boulders that are submerged as they are generally very slippery.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is best to always have a buddy with you if you are crossing a large stream or river. Interlock your arms, as you wade across the water as an increased measure of safety.
  • If you should fall into the water, remain calm and don't panic. If you are in a big river, or large stream, with a rapid current and find yourself in water over your head, point your feet downstream, pull your knees up to your chest and lean back. Use your hands to navigate to shallow water, where you can stand up.
  • Wading boots should be used in the serf and shoes with felt soles should be used in rivers.
  • Never wade in a rocky stream if you don't have to.
