A birthday party is not complete without a birthday cake. Cutting a cake can be tricky and can make a beautiful confection look like it exploded. By following a few tips, you can cut a rectangular birthday cake and still have it look like cake when you are through.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 5-inch serrated knife
  • Paper towels
  • Cake-serving spatula
Step1
Use a serrated knife made for cake cutting or for bread. Use a knife that has approximately a five- to six-inch blade.
Step2
Start by cutting the cake lengthwise. Make your first cut in the center of the cake and work your way out to the edges so that the pieces are uniform.
Step3
Clean the blade of the knife after each slice in the cake. Use several paper towels or napkins to do this.
Step4
Cut the width of the cake next. Start in the middle and work out towards the sides of the cake. Wipe the blade after each cut.
Step5
Use a cake-serving spatula just smaller than the cake pieces to remove the cake. Do not use a large spatula because it will destroy the edges of adjoining pieces.

Tips & Warnings

  • Plan cuts so that high-demand pieces, those with large frosting decorations, are centered on individual pieces of cake or spread over a few pieces.
  • Set ice cream cakes out to thaw thirty minutes before cutting. Dip the knife in hot water prior to each cut.
  • Use caution while using knives around small children.
  • Sharp knives can cut fingers easily.
