How to Select Financial Planning Software
Choosing financial planning software can turn out to be more complex than you imagine. Because of the many options available, it has become harder to decide which one is the best program is for you. Programs such as Quicken and Microsoft Money, while well known, are not the right choices for everybody. It's important to become informed before you spend money on something you may not be able to use.

Select Financial Planning Software
-
1
Look for something that fits your knowledge level. Software available on the market varies from the simplest, most basic programs that help you keep a budget to complex systems that can balance your checkbook and manage your investment portfolio. If you have little to no knowledge about financial software or if you don't want to invest the time and effort to learn about it, start with a more basic system.

2
Make a list of the tools you need in financial planning software. If you want a way to balance your checkbook, keep track of business expenses separately or estimate retirement funds, you need more than a basic planner. Some software is also better than others for budgeting or tracking everyday expenses.

Read reviews from qualified sources, such as "PC Magazine," to help select software (see Resources below). Take into consideration both the pros and cons of each program, such as ease of use, access to updates and bugs. Compare different companies to see what they offer for the same price.
-
4
Look for free demos. Many of the lesser-known financial planning software companies will allow you to download free trials from their websites, so you can see if you like the system before you select it. While free demos may not be fully operable, you can still get a good sense of what the program offers.

5
Ask others what they use. If you know somebody who has pretty much the same financial issues you have, ask her what software she uses and how she likes it. Or, check what your company uses for its general financial issues and how well it works.

Free software is available online if you want to start with something very basic and don't mind dealing with the logos and advertising that come along with it.
