How to Take a Walking Tour of Nice

Nice, located along the Mediterranean Sea on the French Riviera, has been a favorite vacation spot since the late 19th century. Fitzgerald wrote about it; Hemmingway summered there; and Matisse painted its vibrant colors. The city is a fascinating one to explore on foot, with distinct neighborhoods, ranging from the glamorous Promenade to the historic Old Town.

1. Stroll along the Promenade des Anglais. The Promenade des Anglais is a broad boardwalk that edges the beach extending from the center of town around the Bay of Angels. Created in the 1890's and named for the many British tourists that enjoyed the area during that time, the Promenade takes you by casinos, art deco townhouses, the gracious Hotel Negresco and dozens of sidewalk cafes.
2. Explore Old Town. In contrast to the sweeping and open Promenade, the streets of Nice's Old Town are narrow and winding. Here you'll find sienna-colored building with tile roofs; small, ornate chapels; and the festive flower market open six days a week.
3. Check out the Rue de France Pedestrian Zone. Nice's "zone pietonne" is a hub for tourists and residents alike. There are souvenir shops, gourmet food stores, cafes, clothing stores and creperies. The omnipresent street entertainers add to the gaiety of the area.
4. Walk down by the Port. The port area has been the heart of Nice since the 13th century. Here fishing and transport ships arrive and depart, bearing flags from all over the world. Watch the ferries depart—and fishermen, if you get up early—and sit down to a fresh seafood meal. The area is also home to many of the city's most trendy nightclubs.
