How to Make Mustard
A ballpark hot dog, a ham sandwich and a turkey sub don't taste the same without a hefty dose of mustard. Luckily, mustard is cheap and easy to acquire. It's in the refrigerator, at the condiment stand or already spread nice and even on your just-bought sandwich. - Water
- Tablespoon
- Lemon juice
- Mixing bowl
- Yellow mustard seeds
- Brown mustard seeds
- Food processor
- Flour
- Garlic
- Salt
- Powdered sugar
- Teaspoon
- Turmeric
- Condiment jar
- Whey (optional)

Combine 1 cup of water with a 2-3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Put the mix in a bowl and add 3 tablespoons of yellow mustard seeds and 3 tablespoons of brown mustard seeds. Let it sit for 8 hours or overnight.

Empty the mustard seeds into a food processor or electric mixing bowl. The food processor is recommended. Be extra cautious when using an electric mixer to make this condiment.

Add 1/2 cup flour, 2 cloves garlic, 1 tablespoon of salt, 1 tablespoon of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of turmeric to the food processor.

Puree your ingredients in the food processor. Run the machine until you can see that everything has been thoroughly mixed and all the mustard seeds have been ground up. This usually takes about 3 minutes.

Collect your newly-mixed mustard and pour into a condiment jar or other container with a sealable lid. Store in the refrigerator.

Tips & Warnings
For a more English-style mustard, replace the tablespoon of powdered sugar with a tablespoon of brown sugar.
Whey will increase the life of your homemade condiment. Add 2 tablespoons of whey when you add the rest of the ingredients for mustard. It will last 3 to 4 months.
Homemade mustard should be kept in the refrigerator at all times and will last 3 to 4 weeks.
