Frames are sections of a webpage that are independently controlled to create the presentation of the webpage. Often, a frameset is created with the purpose of keeping one or more of the frames on the page static (such as the title or menu) and changing the center, often called the master, frame. Creating a frameset in Dreamweaver is as simple as choosing a few menu options.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Dreamweaver 8

Step1
Open Dreamweaver. Click "New HTML" to open a blank HTML page.
Step2
Bring the Properties and Frames palettes up by clicking on the "Windows" menu and selecting "Properties" and "Frames." You should see checkmarks beside the names in the "Windows" menu. The palettes should now be open in your workspace.
Step3
Click the "View" menu. Select "Visual Aids" and then the "Frame Borders" menu item. This will allow you to see the frame borders while you are in Design view.
Step4
Select the "Modify" menu. Select the "Frameset" submenu and click either "Split Frame Left", "Split Frame Right", "Split Frame Up" or "Split Frame Down." The split will occur where your insertion point is at on the screen.
Step5
Click and drag your frame border with your mouse to the location where you would like it to be.
Step6
Use the "Frameset" submenu in the "Modify" menu to add any other additional frames to your document.
Step7
Use the "Frames" palette to select your frames and the "Properties" palette to name and format your frames.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the "Frameset" submenu options are dimmed, try clicking somewhere in the white space of your document to make them available.
