How to Cook Japanese Rice

Rice is a staple in many cultures. In Japan, rice is the most important food. For example the word rice in Japanese is "gohan" which also means "meal," while breakfast is "Asa (morning)-gohan. As in many cultures, rice is offered with every Japanese meal. A pot of rice is left on the kitchen table whenever anyone might need a snack in between meals. Instructions

      Wash the rice thoroughly. Rise and re-rinse the rice until the water runs clear. Drain and then set aside.

      Fill your rice cooker or a deep pan with water. Use 1/5 more water for every cup of rice. For example, for one cup rice, use one and 1/5 cup water. Pour in the rice and let it soak for at least an hour.

      Place a lid on the pan and start cooking the rice on high heat until the water has come to a boil. Afterwards, lower the heat and cook the rice for 15 to 20 minutes. Be sure not to burn the rice on the bottom.

      Take the rice off the stove and let it settle or steam for 10 to 15 minutes. Do not take the lid off during this time.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use a rice cooker, you do not have to worry about adjusting the heat. However after the rice is cooked, be sure to let it steam for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

  • Be sure to buy the Japanese short grained rice because only with the short grained rice will the rice stick. American long grain rice will not work with this recipe.
