How to Control a Shanked Pass

A shanked pass occurs during the game of volleyball. It happens when a player's arms do not connect with the ball properly which produces an uncontrollable pass. There are a number of ways a shanked pass goes awry. A shanked pass usually hits the net. This means that it's the setters job to control the shanked pass and save the hit. Though difficult, it is possible to control a shanked pass.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Race to the ball. Immediately upon seeing the shanked pass run to get underneath it. Get there in time the ball stays in play.
Step2
Drop to your knees when necessary, to get underneath the ball. Watch your fingers, body position and the net.
Step3
Position both arms for the pass. Prepare to pass higher than usual because of your low position. Judge the distance between yourself, the net and teammate before hitting the ball.
Step4
Use the net to pass. Aim for a different spot and angle the ball toward the awaiting teammate. This is essential; the ball should bounce away from the net allowing the teammate room to strike.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before the match begins toss the ball at the net to test the tension and direction of the bounce.
  • Practice situations that could result in a shanked pass during your regular practices. This will help you learn to read your teammates.
  • If you pass upwards your teammate will not have room to hit the ball and will likely touch the net.
  • Becareful when playing a physical sport like volleyball. Position arms and hands correctly to avoid injury.
