Going to a jewelry store to choose a ring is matter of personal taste. If the ring is a diamond engagement or wedding ring, its significance is even greater. Given the expense of the diamonds plus the sentimental value, you don't want to take a chance on losing your diamonds. Here are some tips to help you choose the right prong setting for your ring.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure the prongs hold the gemstone snugly. It should not wobble or move in any direction.

  2. Step 2

Look at the ring from its side. Check that the stone sits evenly. Check it from the front, back and sides.

  3. Step 3

Beware of thin, flat prongs. They easily break, which puts your gemstone at risk. Even if they don't break, they quickly wear away.

  4. Step 4

Insure the prong that you choose is in correct proportion for the setting and stone. If the prong is too big, you can lose the diamond. If the prong is too small, it can wear away in a matter of years, and you may lose the stone.

  5. Step 5

Evaluate the size of the prong in relation to the size of the gemstone. If the prong is too large, it overpowers the diamond. If the prong is too small for the diamond, you risk losing your diamond because the prong couldn't hold it. Prongs that are out of proportion for the ring also affect the beauty of the diamond.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid hooked prongs. This type of prong forms an open loop before it touches the stone. This type of prong setting frequently catches on clothing, causing you to lose the stone.
