How to Use Acid Dyes

Acid Dyes are easy to use and can be used on all animal fibers. Even some plant fiber, like bamboo, can be dyed with Acid Dyes. There are several techniques for dyeing. Experiment with each one to find one that appeals to you and creates the color and looks desired. If the finished product is not to your liking, it's simple to dry your fiber and re-dye it again.

    Instructions

    Things You'll Need

    • Acid Dyes
    • Disposable Cups
    • White Vinegar
    • Ceramic or Stainless Steel Pot
    • Animal Fiber or Yarn
    • Foam Brushes
    • Vegetable Steamer
    1. Mix the Acid Dyes

      • 1

Measure out the Acid Dyes. The amount of dye used depends on the weight of the fiber being dyed and the desired intensity of the final color.

      • 2

Add boiling water to the Acid Dyes. Make sure the Dyes dissolve completely. The amount of water isn't important only that the Dyes can dissolve totally.

      • 3

Add vinegar to the dye. This makes the dye acidic so that it can attach to the fiber.

      Immersion Dyeing

      • 1

Add the Acid Dye mix of the boiling water, Acid Dye and Vinegar to a pot of boiling water. To ensure an even color, make sure the dye is mixed into the total water completely.

      • 2

Add the fiber or yarn to the pot and push down the fiber with a wooden spoon to ensure that the Dye covers it completely.

      • 3

        Simmer for 30 minutes.

      Paint Dyeing

      • 1

Use Foam Brushes to soak up Acid Dye Mix and press Dye into fiber.

      • 2

Place fiber in Vegetable steamer over pot of boiling water and place a lid on top to hold in the steam.

      • 3

        Steam for 30 minutes.

      Multi-Color Dyeing

      • 1

Bring water to a simmer in a pot and place fiber in pot.

      • 2

Mix together several colors of Acid Dye.

      • 3

Carefully pour the Acid Dyes into different areas of the pot.

      • 4

        Simmer for 30 minutes.
