    Instructions

      • 1

Check the bedroom. Look at where the bed is in relation to any heat source. If it is too close to a heating duct, this may be drying out the membranes of the nostrils, making them more susceptible to bleeding episodes. Turning down the heat at night to between 60 and 64 degrees may also help.

      • 2

Humidify the air. This is particularly helpful if you live in a dry climate.

      • 3

Take a shower. Breathe deeply to take in the warm, moist air. A saline solution sprayed into the nostrils can further moisten the membranes.

      • 4

Eat foods containing bioflavonoids. Any food that is high in Vitamin C will do the trick, particularly citrus fruits. Bioflavonoids are good for strengthening the blood vessels, making them less susceptible to rupture.

      • 5

Watch for allergies. Anything that causes an allergic reaction may be causing the nose to bleed.

      • 6

Keep fingernails short. A child whose nose is constantly irritated may be tempted to pick it. This could contribute to the frequency of the bleeding episodes.

      • 7

Use a small amount of petroleum jelly in the nostrils to keep the membranes moist. Other remedies that may be helpful are drops of castor oil, Vitamin E or zinc oxide inserted into each nostril on daily basis.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Use of blood thinners may cause nosebleeds. Aspirin is a commonly used blood thinner, as is Coumadin. Consult with your doctor if you believe this may be contributing to your nosebleeds.

    • Nosebleeds above the septum can be serious. These happen more often in the elderly. If in doubt, check with your doctor.
