How to Become a Line Producer

The entertainment industry employs several different kinds of producers to work on movies and television shows. There are general producers, executive producers, co-producers and associate producers. There is also a position known as a line producer. Here's how to become one.

        Know that there are no specific education requirements in order to become a line producer. But a line producer must have certain skills. Overseeing the budget to make a film or television program is the responsibility of the line producer, so you must have strong business management ability. If you don't, consider taking a course in business administration.

        Develop your leadership skills. You must be strong enough to handle people and keep the budget within limitations. Since you will be responsible for the daily activities of the production process, you must be able to communicate clearly and amicably.

        Be organized. You must supervise the physical aspects of filming, such as making sure props are in place and cameras are in order with set-points marked. You must bring good ideas and creativity to the table when you supervise shooting.

        Start on your way to become a line producer by getting a job at a studio. Get your foot in the door by working as an errand-runner. You must learn all you can with on-the-job training. Ask for an internship. Competition is stiff. If you want to become a line producer, maintain a professional appearance and attitude.
