Survey the field. Most otaku involve themselves in Japanese comics and entertainment culture. However, the term has been expanded to refer to almost anything that can cultivate a passionate, sometimes slavish, interest in a topic. Even devotees to such things as portabello mushrooms have received the moniker. So, check out the world of Japanese animation and think about what interests you most passionately.

Focus your interest. An otaku concentrates the interest and passion on a particular form or even series of comics and animation. Some otaku dig into the world of DragonBall Z while others go for the lore and life of the hit Japanese anime film, "Akira." Whatever your passion, make sure it's narrow enough for you to focus all of your attention on it.

Stay up to date with the literature. The world of the otaku is constantly changing as new series, facts and episodes are released every day. Otaku Magazine is a good publication to help you become a solid otaku. Also, subscribe to magazines and blogs devoted to your favorite series so you stay up-to-date.

Go to an otakon. An otakon is the otaku's equivalent of a comic convention. Some otakons are informal, consisting of a few vendors on a city square selling and trading material. However, if you want to go to a formal, world-class Otakon, check out the annual Otakon Convention that is usually held in Baltimore, Maryland.
