After you've invested time in creating a comprehensive address book, the last thing you want is for your computer to crash and to lose all those precious contacts. You can avoid disasters like this by using Mac Mail's distinctive backup features. The following easy steps show you how to back up your address book.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Access the Mac Mail Address Book from the computer desktop. If the file does not automatically display, configure the program so that it displays on start up.
Step2
Choose "File" on the Main Menu. Scroll down to "Back up Address Book" and a dialog box opens. It contains prompts for backup file locations on the hard drive.
Step3
Select the location where the backup file should be placed. Either browse the files to pinpoint the folder or manually type in the path where you want to store the file. Allow the program to automatically insert the current time and date on the backup document.
Step4
Select "save" once the program displays the time-stamped backup file and the correct location. Restart the computer to activate the backup file even if the program does not offer this option. Access the folder where the backup file was placed to confirm that the backup was performed successfully.
