Neutrals such as black, tan and white are a great base for a wardrobe but you need to have brighter colors to round out your closet. We don't live in a black and white world and it's important to find the right colors to add to a wardrobe. Read on for ideas to come up with the colors that will work best for you.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric swatches
  • Nail polish
  • Colored stone jewelry
  • Bright colored camisole
  • Bright colored shoes and bag
  • Bright colored coat
  • Bright colored scarf
  1. Step 1

Hold small swatches of fabric to your face to see which colors complement your skin tones. Warm colors such as yellow, orange and red look best with olive or dark skin. Cool colors such as pink, red and blue look better with light skin.

  2. Step 2

Add color in small doses if you are new to branching out from the neutral palette in your wardrobe. Polish your nails with a colored polish and wear some colored stone jewelry to start with.

  3. Step 3

Wear a splash of color in the form of a camisole under a jacket. If you are wearing it at the office you can keep it a little less bright than if you are going out to dinner. A little more subdued color is appropriate for work.

  4. Step 4

Throw a curveball the next time you wear a little black dress by adding a brightly colored shoe and bag to spice up the look. Lime green or pink works for summer and red or purple works in the winter.

  5. Step 5

Cover all of your neutral outfits with a bright color coat. If you just can't bring yourself to add color to your everyday work wardrobe then add it by wearing a bright red coat. If an entire coat looks like it is too much then add color with a long scarf.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash brightly colored clothes in cold water to keep the color fresh and true. Hot water will fade colors quickly.
  • Use splashes of vibrant color as an accent and not as the base of your wardrobe. Too much color looks garish and too much like a circus.
