The stick is the most important piece of equipment in lacrosse and finding the best fit can be a player's key to success. Lacrosse sticks come in many different models and lengths, making it difficult to know which one is right for you. Choosing the appropriate pocket type and depth and the right handle length will aid in mastering the basic skills needed to play lacrosse.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Examine the type of pocket on the stick. A mesh pocket is best for a beginner, providing better ball control while moving. The traditional woven pocket doesn't offer great control but is more accurate when passing and shooting and is recommended for more advanced players. The women's pocket must be the traditional woven type with 4 to 5 leather thongs and only 2 shooting strings.

  2. Step 2

Measure the depth of the pocket. A deeper pocket will offer better ball control and aid in short passing done by attackers. A shallower pocket is better for long passes like those thrown by defenders.

  3. Step 3

Weigh the stick. A heavier stick is better for defense while a lighter one is easier to maneuver while running with the ball.

  4. Step 4

Measure the length of the stick. A shorter player should use a shorter stick and a taller player should use a longer one. This can also be determined by the position played. Attackers use 40 to 42 inch sticks, midfielders use 40 to 46 inch sticks and defenders can use 56 to 72 inch sticks. If you're not sure what position you'll be playing, choose the length that feels most manageable and comfortable.
