How to Add Wheels to an Ottoman

An ottoman can be a comfortable place to prop up your feet as well as a hiding place for DVDs, videos or your spare blanket. Some ottomans are too heavy to be moved by one person unless you empty it or it has wheels. Before you buy a new ottoman, you should try adding wheels to your current foot rest.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Pick a mounting system for your wheels. You need to flip your ottoman onto its top so that you can see the bottom. The size of your ottoman's frame may determine which type you of caster you must use. A stem caster uses a socket adapter inserted into the wood to secure it to furniture. A plate caster is attached to the furniture by a thin metal plate.
Step2
Choose a caster. Most furniture wheels are casters, which are complete wheel and horn assemblies. You need to decide if you want a swivel caster which can rotate 360 degrees or a stationary caster that can only move in a straight line. You must consider the amount of weight the caster needs to support, the type of flooring you have, how the caster attaches to the ottoman and the type of wheel on the caster.
Step3
Drill holes in the frame at the bottom 4 corners of your ottoman, following the manufacturer's specifications for drilling the holes. For stem casters, you need to drill one hole in the center of the leg or area where the caster is to go. For plate casters, you must hold the metal plate to the ottoman and mark where to drill. Once you have these marks, drill guide holes that are slightly smaller in diameter than the screws at each mark.
Step4
Add the wheels. You need to add the socket for a stem caster to the ottoman by tapping the socket into the hole you drilled. Then you push the casters into their sockets until they lock in place. For plate casters you secure the plate to the ottoman by twisting the screws into the drilled guide holes until they are tight.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ball casters swivel, travel well across carpet and hardwood and come in a variety of styles to match décor.
  • To drill holes without manufacturer's specifications, you need to select a bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the socket or screws.
  • If your ottoman is a storage ottoman, secure the lid before flipping it over.
