Step 1
Pull the boat out of the water. Sailing catamarans need to be pulled out of the water after they're used. The boat's small size and tendency to lie low in the water make corrosion and damage from choppy seas more likely. Pulling the boat out of the water lets you store the boat in stable, controlled conditions so you get the most out of the boat over time.
-
Step 2
Wash the boat. All parts of the boat must be thoroughly washed with clean, fresh water. Salt and mineral buildup from the water can corrode sails and moving parts and cause jams in cleats and winches. Use a hose to thoroughly rinse the entire boat, including the sails if it's a sailing boat.
-
Step 3
Inspect the hulls for damage. Because catamarans have a small draft, many boaters take the boat into shallow waters. A bump from a rock can cause cracks or small holes in the hull of the catamaran, so it's important to check every part of the hulls for damage.
-
Step 4
Replace the sails and rigging. To thoroughly maintain a catamaran, you should replace the sails every few years and have the rigging checked and serviced at the same time. Warped sails and faulty rigging cause undue stress on other parts of the boat and can easily be avoided if you maintain the boat correctly.
