Wine labels are usually difficult to remove. One method may not give the desired results every time because of the varied types of glues used to apply the label to the wine bottle. Below are some of the different methods that effectively remove a wine label.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Plastic jug
  • Dish detergent
  • Pot to boil water
  • Razor
  • Ammonia and gloves
  1. Step 1

Use a tall open-mouthed plastic jug. Fill it with warm water and add a few drops of dish detergent. Fill the empty wine bottle with very hot water and immerse it in the jug for two to four hours. After the glue is softened, carefully peel off the label with your hands.

  2. Step 2

Fill the sink with hot water and immerse the empty wine bottle overnight. Remove the bottle in the morning and easily peel off the wine label.

  3. Step 3

Boil water in a pot. Hold the wine bottle over the pot of boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. The steam affects the glue and softens the label. Carefully remove the label with your hands.

  4. Step 4

Remove a stubborn wine label by pre-soaking the bottle in a jug or sink and then filling the bottle with hot water again. Put the cork in the bottle and let the label air dry completely. Lay the bottle on a thick towel and use a razor to scrape off the label. Scrape one side and stop when you reach the middle of the label. Switch to the other end and continue scratching until the label comes off. Blot the bottle with paper towels to remove any remaining glue.

  5. Step 5

Try ammonia. Fill a small bucket with water and add 1/4 cup of ammonia. Immerse a water-filled wine bottle in the bucket for 30 minutes (place a cover over the bucket). Use gloves when removing the wine label. Wash the bottle under cold water to remove any residue.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use caution when working with a sharp razor or a chemical solution.

on 12/9/2008 It depends on a winery. If a winery respects wine label collectors they will attach their labels to a botle in a way that it sticks well, does not fall off yet can slide right off after immersing the bottle just for a couple hours in a warm or even cold water. I bought expensive ($13-$25 range) European wines and 2 out of 3 slide off right away yet were looking as the labels were stuck on the bottle forever. None of the US wines labels does that.

1. Synthetic Labels (they dont tear): Grab the edge of the label and pull it off exposing the adhesive. Then apply Goo Gone (you can buy at any hardware store like Ace, Home, Depot, Lowes and let it sit for a few minutes and rince with watter, the adhesive will be gone.
2. Paper Wine Labels: Buy a label remover plastic tip or steal tip you can buy them from Kencostore.com and remove the paper part of the label very easily with these cheep tools. Then apply the gooGone and wash under watter. VERY EASY
