Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Check the local weather and water forecasts before setting out to sail. A sunny day with a light steady breeze is recommended. Tell family members or friends about your travel dates and itinerary for added security.
Step2
Get your boat professionally inspected before any sailing expedition. To do a self-inspection, check the meter, engine, fuel and major mechanical components including horn and the anchor line.
Step3
Bring the proper safety equipment for a sailing trip. Pack a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flashlight, fresh supply of drinking water, radio and flare gun. Wear a life jacket on the boat.
Step4
Follow the local area's rules and regulations for sailing. Inquire about restricted sailing zones before you set sail. Also be up-to-date on your navigation skills.
Step5
Distribute the load evenly in the boat. Use only what is needed. Also use caution when shifting weight in the boat at sea as sudden movements can tip over a small boat.
Step6
Be aware of other boats and swimmers in the area and sail at a medium speed to avoid collisions. Look out for overhead power lines while sailing. Turn your boat in the opposite direction if the mast of the boat is in danger of touching the lines.
Step7
Do not use drugs or alcohol before or during a sail. If you are taking prescription medication that cause impairment, have another experienced person sail the boat.
