How to Date an Amputee

Sensitivity and understanding are part of any thoughtful relationship, but they are absolutely crucial qualities to possess if you, as an able-bodied person, are interested in making a date with an amputee.

Instructions

    • 1

Remember that you are trying to date a person, not a disability. Getting to know the person outside of a socially constructed identity is important if both parties are going to enjoy themselves.

    • 2

Prepare yourself for certain unfortunate reactions from the general population if you and your amputee date choose a public location for your time together. Avoid making comments about the reactions of others as this may make your date uncomfortable.

    • 3

Take your dating partner's condition into consideration before making elaborate plans for a physically active date that might put strain on an amputee. This can often be simply an innocent accident on your part but it could be perceived as thoughtless by the other person in the dating relationship.

    • 4

Fell free to discuss the nature of your date's physical condition if she brings it up. Talking about something as personal as a debilitation can actually bond people together in a relationship.

    • 5

Date an amputee for the same reason you date anyone else--because you like them. Don't fall into the trap of getting involved in a relationship because of some sense of charity or pity, both motives that are deeply offensive to the other person involved.

    • 6

Allow the relationship to develop at its own pace and don't try to force anything too soon. Like all possibilities in love, dating someone of a different ability status requires time and patience.
