If you have decided to take horse riding lessons, or want to start your child in riding lessons, you will need to choose a horse riding stable. Doing a little bit of homework before making your choice will help to ensure that it is a safe and enjoyable experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ask for references from horse owners, veterinarians and tack shop owners. People who work in these areas can most likely refer you to a horse riding stable with a good reputation.

  2. Step 2

Request a tour of the facility. Pay attention to the cleanliness and upkeep of the stable. Horse stalls and walkways should be kept clean and free of hazards.

  3. Step 3

Watch an instructor giving a lesson. Notice if helmets are required of all riders. Pay attention to how well the instructor interacts with the student.

  4. Step 4

Observe horses. Do they display good manners while being handled? Do the horses appear to be healthy and well fed?

  5. Step 5

Find out if the instructors have expertise in your chosen riding discipline. For example if you are interested in learning how to do show jumping with horses, is there a trainer that has knowledge in this area?

  6. Step 6

Inquire about the stable's hours of operation. It is best to choose a horse riding stable that has a convenient location and has hours that allow you to take lessons when your schedule allows.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are a novice to horse riding, it is probably a good idea to bring along someone with horse experience when assessing a horse riding stable.
  • Some horse riding stables will provide helmets. However, it is always a good idea to buy your own to make sure you have the right fit.
  • Always ask permission before observing a lesson. Some students are not comfortable with being watched.
  • Never walk around a horse riding stable without first letting the staff know you are there and asking if you can look around. Never enter horse stalls.
