How to Organize Rolls of Ribbon

The holidays are over and it's time to organize your wrapping supplies for next year. Frustration sets in as you realize the ribbon bought for this season will end up the way you found last year's supply: completely crushed and so tangled that you have to cut off half your supply. There's a better way to prepare and here are some suggestions for organizing your rolls of ribbon.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Be creative and save money at the same time by making your own organizer. You don't have to spend tons of money on store bought gift wrapping centers and organizers. You can create your own ribbon organizer by way of saved, cleaned yogurt containers. All you have to do is put one spool in each container, cut a hole in the top of the container and thread the ribbon through the hole.
Step2
Craft a multi-roll holder. If you choose not to store your ribbon individually, you can still save money by using old cracker, cereal or shoe boxes to hold multiple spools. Just insert a small wooden dowel with the spools already on it through the top and bottom of the box. Cut a hole for each spool at the side or top and thread the ribbon through.
Step3
Decorate a variety of boxes according to use. Save your old shoe boxes and you can simply put the rolls of ribbon in them without attaching them to anything at all. Use some old wrapping paper, paints or contact paper to adorn the boxes. If you're organizing your Christmas ribbon, use green and red on the box. For storing all occasion ribbon, use a variety of colors and patterns.
Step4
Buy some clear plastic shoe boxes. If you prefer, and you're not particularly crafty, invest in a few clear plastic shoe boxes and organize your ribbons in them. This is a great way to keep them at hand and access what you need quickly as you can see what's inside the box.
Step5
Save your baby wipes containers. If you have a baby, you have tons of these lying around waiting to be recycled. You can recycle them yourself by repurposing them. They're small enough not to take up a lot of space and the labels are easily removed. Put a few of your ribbon rolls in each of them as they become available.
Step6
Install an inexpensive tension rod. If you're lucky enough to have a craft room that can double as a wrapping station, buy a tension rod (the kind used for curtains) and put it up between shelving units with your spools hanging from the rod. All of your ribbon will be right at hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wrap an old ponytail holder around the spool to prevent your ribbon from unraveling.
  • If you're not crafty or don't have the time to decorate your own boxes, you can buy pretty round hat boxes to store your ribbon.
