How to Wallpaper Around Switches and Outlets

Adding wallpaper to a room can drastically change its look. Hanging wallpaper on flat open wall space is a simple task, but when you come across outlets and switches the task is more difficult. Follow this technique for wallpapering around these electrical devices.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Extension cords
  • Temporary lighting
  • Wallpaper
  • Utility knife
  1. Step 1

    Turn off the electricity to the room you wish to wallpaper by switching off the circuit breaker to that room. If the room doesn't have enough natural light, run extension cords from another area of the house and hook up temporary lighting.

  2. Step 2

    Remove the switch plates and outlet covers using a screwdriver.

  3. Step 3

    Place the paper on the walls covering the outlet and switch holes as if they were not there.

  4. Step 4

    Use a utility knife to cut an "X" across each outlet and switch plate opening. Carefully cut straight lines down and across to remove the paper covering the electrical device.

  5. Step 5

    Reattach the switch plates or outlet covers.

  6. Step 6

    Allow ample drying time before turning the power back on to the area.

Tips & Warnings
  • Failing to turn off the electricity can result in an electrical shock which will injure and may even kill you.
  • Do not cut deeply when removing the paper of you may nick a wire creating a shock or fire hazard.
