Instructions

    • 1

Prewash all fabric that you are using. This prevents the fabric from running, fading and shrinking. It also softens the fabric and makes it easier to handle.

    • 2

Cut out the fabric shapes. Use a template or pattern to cut the pieces to appliqué. As you cut, leave a 1/8-inch seam allowance around the entire edge. If you are cutting the appliqué pieces on the wrong side, turn the pattern over as well.

    • 3

Carefully clip any curves and outside edges to the pattern edge. This allows the fabric to turn under easily for the hem.

    • 4

Place the cutout shape on the background piece. Pin in place from the back side.

    • 5

Put a pillow on your lap for support. Lay the material and the appliqué on the pillow.

    • 6

Bring a threaded needle from the underside of the fabric and come up just on the edge of the appliqué piece. Blind stitch the edge. Tuck the seam allowance under as you stitch the cutout into place.

    • 7

Attach the appliqué by machine, if you prefer. You can use either a straight stitch or a decorative one. You can also either turn the seam allowance under, or you can let it ravel for a more primitive look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some patterns call for the appliqué have a blind stitch around the edge, with a running stitch sewn 1/8 inch from the edge of the cutout. This gives the appliqué more of a quilted appearance.

  • A blanket stitch is another common way to finish an appliqué edge.
