If you plan to enter graduate school, you will probably have to do well onthe GRE. Because the math section tests one's ability to solve math problem and to identify simple solutions to seemingly complex problems, the questions can be tricky. Whether you majored in journalism or chemistry, proper studying for the GRE is crucial for success. Follow these steps to learn geometry for the GRE.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Forget about proofs. Many panic when they think of geometry because they remember writing complex, often tedious proofs in high school. The GRE math section does not test knowledge of geometric proofs.
Step2
Enroll in a GRE prep course. Getting a high GRE math score involves more than intelligence and specialized knowledge. Preparatory courses review basic geometric principles and teach students to identify certain types of questions and answer them correctly. Learning how to spot trick questions can significantly raise your test score.
Step3
Buy additional study materials. Although your GRE course instructor may discourage purchasing outside supplies, get books and flashcards with geometry practice questions.
Step4
Learn formulas and how to apply them. Know how to calculate perimeter, area and volume. You'll also have to understand the Pythagorean theorem, coordinate geometry, the characteristics of circles and triangles and how to find the slope of a line.
Step5
Work problems and take practice tests. Become accustomed to the computer-based test format and to working within time constraints. Recreate the testing environment to the extent possible for each test you take at home. Carefully review missed questions and work similar problems until you firmly grasp concepts.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make or buy flash cards to carry with you. Flash cards are particularly helpful when learning geometric formulas and terms.
  • If your prep course is not increasing your practice test scores, hire a private tutor to help you learn GRE geometry. You will benefit from an individualized study plan.
  • Sleep well the night before the test and eat a nutritious meal on test day. Try not to dwell on the exam the previous night and resist the urge to cram. Your level of performance depends not only on your knowledge, but also on your physical and mental well-being.
