How to Replace a Toilet's Fill Valve

Replacing a fill valve on a toilet will stop the continuous trickling sound of water running in the tank. When the fill valve is not working properly, it lets extra water into the tank. The excess water then constantly drips into the overflow tube and into the toilet bowl. Here are steps for replacing the valve Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Toilet

    • 1

Shut off the water supply. The valve for this is usually on the lower left- hand side of the toilet.

    • 2

Flush the toilet to empty the water from the tank.

    • 3

Absorb any remaining water in the tank with a sponge or paper towels.

    • 4

Disconnect the water line from the bottom of the tank.

    • 5

Remove the bolt that holds the old fill valve in place and pull it out.

    • 6

Clean the area around the opening thoroughly so that the new replacement washer seats properly.

    Install the New Fill Valve

    • 7

Adjust the height of the new valve so that the mark on the valve top is located no less then one inch above the overflow tube.

    • 8

Push the valve shank into the opening and tighten the nut. Be careful not to overtighten the locknut; turn it only one-half turn, then hand-tighten.

    • 9

Reconnect the water supply to the bottom of the tank.

    • 10

Attach the angle adapter and the refill tube.

    • 11

Rotate the lugs one-eighth turn in a clockwise direction to lock the top valve into position

    • 12

Move the float cup. Squeeze the adjustment clip and move it up or down to adjust the water level.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is a good idea to also replace the rubber flapper valve as it tends to disintegrate after a few years and leaves a residue in the toilet tank.
