Step 1
Know that there is no specific treatment for Coxsackie and that the patient is treated symptomatically.
-
Step 2
Be aware that many children that have been infected with the Coxsackievirus do not need any specific treatment. Some of these children will simply get better with time.
-
Step 3
Give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen to bring down a fever and make him more comfortable. The doctor may prescribe additional medications for your child.
-
Step 4
Make sure that your child drinks plenty of fluids. Liquids will keep your child from becoming dehydrated. Water is a good beverage for your child.
-
Step 5
Feed your child soft foods. If she has lesions or blisters in her mouth, eating causes extreme discomfort. Soft foods, such as pudding, are less painful to eat.
-
Step 6
Offer cold foods such as ice cream and milk. They'll coat and numb the mouth which can make the child feel better while providing extra nourishment and liquids.
-
Step 7
Allow your child to rest as much as possible. Resting in bed or on a sofa at home can help your child feel better.
