When most people think of the guitar, they think of rocking out with a wicked looking electric instrument in a rock band. However, the beautiful classical guitar is often overlooked and more difficult to play. Learn to how to artfully play the classical guitar.

Things You’ll Need:

  • An adequate guitar

Step1
Locate a guitar that is suitable for playing classically. Search local music stores or online for classical guitars. If you really want to go all out, make sure you string your acoustic guitar with classical guitar strings. There are several types, but they all serve the same purpose--sound.
Step2
Search in your local listings or check with local colleges and music stores for a classical guitar instructor. Make an appointment with a guitar teacher to learn the basics of classical guitar.
Step3
Make sure your guitar has good playability. Check all the strings, check the intonation and make sure it is in top shape for playing. You can do all this with your guitar teacher or a knowledgeable friend.
Step4
Meet with your teacher and communicate your goals in playing the classical guitar. Pick a musical selection with your teacher that you enjoy and that is on your level, and work toward a masterful playing of that piece.
Step5
Practice your guitar for at least an hour if not more a day. Concentrate on scales and technical exercises, and practice your selection pieces.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ask around to find out who the best guitar teachers are and find out their rates.
  • Check a local newspaper for people advertising guitar lessons; often these instructors are music students who charge lower rates for teaching.
  • Check the qualifications of your teacher. You can even ask him to play something so you can judge to see how well he plays his instrument.
  • Ask your teacher to teach you both tab and proper musical notation as most classical guitar music is written in classic notation.
  • Listen to plenty of classical guitar music so you can develop an ear for what good classical guitar sounds like.
