Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Understand what the device does. The DXG-506V is a camcorder, camera and MP3 player all in one. The compact camera comes in blue, pink, silver or black. It is portable and can function as a webcam.
Step2
Consider that some camcorders use mini-DVDs, which are sometimes hard to find if you're on vacation. The DXG camcorder features built-in 32-MB Flash memory, which amounts to about 16 still pictures. But the DXG includes an SD card slot for adding memory. A USB cable transfers images or video to your computer.
Step3
Find out what else you get when you buy a DXG camcorder. It should come with application and driver software and a video editing program. Your computer may already have a video editing program. Look for a USB cable, batteries, earphones, wrist strap and camera pouch.
Step4
Determine whether a DXG camcorder is compatible with your computer system. It works with Windows XP, 2000 or 98 operating systems. You want at least a Pentium III 5000 MHz and 32 MB or RAM. Check that your CD-ROM speed is at least 4x. The camcorder software takes approximately 10 MB of your hard drive.
Step5
Check out the lighting. Although some LCD screens wash out in sunlight, the DXG does its best work in daylight. Low light situations cause the problems. The small flash is located beneath the lens where many people hold the camcorder and cover the flash. If you shoot indoors, make certain enough artificial light is available.
Step6
Hold the DXG to check the easy handling. At approximately 5 pounds and less than 3-inches wide, the DXG 506-V fits in most hands.
Step7
Buy your DXG camcorder online at Amazon or check area discount and electronic stores. Compare prices and consider what you get for your money. Some retailers offer a free starter package that includes a bag, tripod and lens cleaning kit.
