How to Use Gnutella

Gnutella is an open-source computer program that allows you to find files on computers worldwide and share files with those same computers. Usually used for swapping MP3 files, Gnutella is a great way to spread the cyber love and get the latest music.

1. Find a Gnutella servant application that allows you to search for files and to download most types of files. There are several different Gnutella servants out there. Some popular ones are BearShare, Limewire and CXC for Mactella.
2. Configure your Gnutella servant. It must know how you get the Internet so that it can efficiently download files. Setting up a Downloads folder is a good early step to keep things organized.
3. Set up your shared folder carefully. This is what other Gnutella users will search in on your computer. Don't leave it empty, as this will label you a "freeloader" in cyberspace. Many Gnutella users see this as rude behavior and block freeloaders from getting a peek at their hard drives.
4. Protect yourself. Restrict the files that other Gnutella users can see. Your Joni Mitchell collection, sure, but credit card information? No way. Keep your email, personal information and Web browsers under virtual lock and key.
5. Connect and locate other Gnutella hosts and start your file search. Make sure you're specific when you search for files; vague searches slow the process.
6. Download the files you want, making sure to keep updated virus-detection software on your computer to scan through all your downloaded files before you open them.

Tips & Warnings

• Be courteous. Keep download time to a minimum and share files as you would have files shared with you. This will keep you in harmony with other Gnutella users.
• VBS files often carry viruses. Avoid these files.
• In mid-download, you may be kicked off, or the process won't work at all. Try again with another file or a different host.
