Many people dream of running away to join the circus, and circus acrobats have done just that. It takes a crew of individuals to put on a performance and maintain the quality entertainment fans demand, but few employees are as visible as the acrobats.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Perfect your act so you can captivate the audience's attention. Most acrobats have a background in performing art that can include gymnastics, dance, music, street performance, clowning or circus arts. You must be familiar with performing your act live and onstage before you become a circus acrobat.

  2. Step 2

Make a quality demo tape that shows off your act. Most circuses require a complete application packet before they invite you to audition , and part of that application packet is a demo tape. If the casting director doesn't like the demo, you won't proceed in the interview process.

  3. Step 3

Apply for a position online with several circuses including Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and Big Apple Circus. Contact information is also provided on these companies' websites for people who prefer to send a hard copy of their application and demo.

  4. Step 4

Attend an audition once you have peaked the interest of the casting director. The auditions are invitation only and you need to perform at your best in order to have a chance at being hired. Both your personality and talent are important in your audition.

  5. Step 5

Be persistent in maintaining your act, your physique and your passion to entertain after you're hired. Many circuses offer employment on a stand-in basis or contingent upon new acts. It may take months from the time you are hired to the time you appear onstage. You must put your time in and work your way up in the circus.
