The brochures are crumpled and worn. After weeks of discussion everyone is in agreement: the destination is nailed down, and the seniors' vacation is scheduled for spring. The only thing left to do is secure your senior discount fares from your travel agent.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Jot down personal preferences before calling the travel agent. Request at the onset the preference to fly in the morning, an aisle seat or a non-smoking hotel room.

  2. Step 2

Talk directly to the travel agent. It is common practice for a secretary or assistant to relay messages. Find out the best the time to call and when the agent is available to address requests and concerns.

  3. Step 3

Keep a calendar handy. Special accommodations can be arranged by the travel agent when there's specific time constraints. Prepare an alternative in case the agent recommends a schedule change that saves money or shortens travel time.

  4. Step 4

Remember to ask the agent about hotels and car rentals. Packages are often less expensive. Get the best deal and make sure all your questions and concerns are answered.

Tips & Warnings
  • Start plans as soon as possible. It makes getting your preferences met easier, and may result in a substantially lower fare.
  • Note any special needs; if oxygen or a wheelchair is required and advise the travel agent.
  • The definition of senior is not standard across the airline industry. One carrier may say anyone over 50 qualifies, another may say a passenger must be 65 to qualify. Make sure you meet the requirements.
  • Senior discount fares are not always the least expensive. Senior fares offer fewer restrictions, are refundable if for some reason you can't make the flight and can usually be purchased, without penalty, at the last minute. Consider the perks as well as the cost.
