Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Things You’ll Need:
- Windows OS
- 1 GHz processor
- 1 GB available space
- CD-ROM drive
- Speakers
- Headset
- Internet connection
Step1
Make sure your technology is current and includes some basic elements that will help your software run efficiently. For PCs, you need Windows 2000, XP or Vista. You should have a Pentium 4 or other 1 GHz processor. You need 1 GB of space available on your hard drive, a CD-ROM drive, speakers and a Web connection. Some transcription software packages include a headset. If yours doesn't purchase one.
Step2
Determine how your software will be used. Transcription software is available for PCs as well as Macs, but it can also be purchased for Blackberries and cellular phones. Some software is designed specifically for the medical, professional, educational or legal field. Dragon makes transcription software for specific areas. Their medical software is vastly different from their educational package.
Step3
Access the Internet and download the free trials available. Several software providers and websites, including SpeechTechnology.com, offer you a chance to experience and interact with the product before you buy it. You may be required to purchase a license for the software.
Step4
Shop and compare packages and prices. Some software packages are pricier, but they provide better IT support and are more user-friendly. Make sure you purchase transcription software that meets your current needs and also offers you some room to grow.
Step5
Train your transcription software. It often takes a few weeks for the software to recognize and follow your natural speech patterns. You must spend time using and experimenting with the software before you attempt to implement it in a working environment.
