How to Host Trivia Night

Trivia buffs love to display their vast knowledge of random topics. Organizing a trivia night provides friends with a forum for competition. Follow these steps to learn how to host an evening of trivia fun.

Instructions

    • 1

Decide what game to play. From board games to interactive computer programs, trivia is available in various formats. Make your own trivia game by preparing a list of questions and answers. Create your own rules for play.

    • 2

Acquaint yourself with the game and rules ahead of time. Thoroughly read the instructions for play so you are not trying to figure it out after your guests arrive. Load a multimedia game and practice the game.

    • 3

Gather all the necessary game components. Depending on what type of trivia game you're playing, you might need writing instruments, a dry erase board, timer and game pieces.

    • 4

Clear out a seating area in the living room or another suitable space in your house. Arrange the room so players have an unobstructed view of the T.V. or dry erase board. Set up card tables if players need a writing or playing surface.

    • 5

Stock up on snacks and drinks. Every good hostess provides her guest with delicious food and beverages.

    • 6

Instruct your guests on how to play the trivia game. Clearly explain the rules and procedure involved.

    • 7

Keep accurate score. As hostess, your job is to insure a fair and friendly gaming experience. Give a prize to the big winner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Invite an even number of guests for a large group so you can form teams. Keep teams balanced. Don't create a team of history buffs against a team of sports enthusiasts.

  • Have the Internet handy for fact-checking purposes.

  • Don't let the competition get too heated. Be the mediator and make sure everyone is having fun.
