Plums can be purchased fresh or dried. They are high in vitamin C and fiber which lowers blood sugar, cholesterol levels and keeps the colon healthy. Dried plums make easy snacking right out of the bag, and they don't need refrigeration. Follow these steps to maintain healthy digestion with plums.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Eat dried plums or prunes when you are constipated. Dried plums contain twice as much fiber as fresh and are the most popular natural laxative. You can also drink prune juice but be careful not to drink too much. It may take several hours to take effect.

  2. Step 2

Add fresh or dried plums to smoothies. These drinks are a great way to get kids to eat fruit. Check for recipes online.

  3. Step 3

Dine on plums when you're eating other foods that are high in saturated fats, such as cheese. Since plums are high in fiber they will push the fatty food through your system before you absorb too much fat.

  4. Step 4

Place dried plums on top of oatmeal. They act as a natural sweetener and combined with the oatmeal will really clean out your system.

  5. Step 5

Use plums as a free radical neutralizer. Their oxygen radical absorbency score is near the top of the chart. Free radicals are oxygenated chemicals that damage cells and can cause cancer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add dried plums to cream cheese for a great toast or bagel spread.
  • Add chopped dried plums to cake, muffin or pancake batters.
  • Try chopped dried plums with orange marmalade, peanut butter or apple butter.
  • Add dried plums to the filling of pita sandwiches.
