How to Store Floppy Disks

Floppy disks would seem to be on the edge of extinction, thanks to the greater storage capacity available on CD's and flash drives. Yet millions of floppy disks are sold each year. One reason could be simplicity. Floppy disks are still one of the easiest (and cheapest) ways to transfer information from one computer to another.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Keep it cool and clean. Heat and dust are the enemies of floppy disks. Too much of either will quickly render a disk useless. Store disks in plastic cases, don't leave them lying around or throw them unprotected into backpack or briefcase.
Step2
Watch out for magnets. Magnetic fields generated by your computer monitor, your speakers and other electronics, so don't store floppy disks nearby. Exposure to these devices will hasten the death of your disk.
Step3
Protect your disk drive. Be sure the labels on your disk are firmly sealed. A loose label stuck inside your floppy disk drive could ruin it. Use standard computer disk labels.
Step4
Keep the disk in a plastic case, and store the case in an upright position. This will lessen the possibility of weight being inadvertently placed on the disk, and protect it from spills.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to label the disk promptly after storing your information. All disks look the same, and having to search through dozens to find the right one wastes time and energy.
  • Floppy disks are notorious for the tendency to fail with little warning. A disk can work for years and suddenly becoming inoperable, or not work at all even the first time. Back up important data at some point on a CD or other type of storage.
