How to Prevent Aphid Destruction of Hemlock Trees

Aphids are insects that reproduce at fantastic rates. Their larvae cause an infestation on hemlock trees that can be difficult to contain. The spread of aphids, particularly in the eastern United States, started in the mid-1950s and continues to threaten the majestic pine trees. Chemical and natural remedies are available to get rid of the pesky bugs. Your best option is to prevent the nesting of aphids.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Avoid planting trees too close together. The aphids grow in tight quarters. Even though hemlock trees make wonderful thick bushes, the closeness can make it difficult to prevent infestation.
Step2
Trim hemlock trees so that air and rain can move between the branches. Keep the crowns and trim from the bottom up to increase air circulation.
Step3
Mix an insect control product with water. Spread it at the base of the trees in the fall when eggs may be going into hibernation.
Step4
Water the trees in dry weather. Soak the roots and rinse the branches to keep them free of insects that may try to take root.
Step5
Rake under the trees and keep much fresh. Insects can take up residence in the ground and work their way up the trees.
Step6
Remove badly infected trees from surrounding healthy trees. This removal will prevent the insects from spreading from one tree to another.
Step7
Use natural oils and horticultural sprays to prevent aphid destruction. Be prepared to apply at regular intervals since natural insecticides tend not to be as strong and therefore not as effective as the other chemical-based insect products.
