Step 1
Decide on the style of costume to purchase. Base it on the theme and music of the ballet dance to be performed. There are many types of ballet dances such as classical ballet, modern ballet, lyric ballet and even character-type roles within a ballet performance.
-
Step 2
Measure the ballet dancer that will be wearing the costume. Measurements should include their height, waist, hips and bust area. Even measure the circumference of their head if a headpiece or tiara is part of the costume to be purchased.
-
Step 3
Check the obvious purchase options first. The dance instructor may have dance-costuming catalogs for you to view and order from. Often a dancewear catalog may have what you are looking for. Both of these are good options for buying a costume for one or several ballet dancers.
-
Step 4
Visit local dancewear stores. Many of these stores carry some costumes or performance wear in their regular merchandise. Ask if you can view their catalogs for ballet-costuming ideas and if you find what you want, order directly through the store. Don't forget to order any needed accessories at the same time.
-
Step 5
Browse the online sites or Internet sites for ballet-costuming retailers. There are many of these out there, so your options will be good. Be sure to check all the little details ordering this way such as availability, shipping time frames, shipping costs and how their sizing works.
-
Step 6
Talk to other parents of ballet dancers. Many dance companies and studios have an excellent parent network. If you are looking for only one or two costumes, you may be able to buy one from the parent of an older student that has only been worn once or twice. There are even websites that dance parents set up to sell their ballet dancers costumes and accessories.
