How to Play Number Munchers

If you attended elementary school in the 1980's and 1990's, you probably played Number Munchers on an old Apple computer. Though it's graphics may seem outdated and it was designed as an educational game, it's still a lot of fun to play.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Choose your mode of play from five options: multiples, factors, primes, equality and inequality.
Step2
Guard your four Muncher lives. When you munch the wrong number, you lose a life, or if an enemy eats you, you lose a life.
Step3
Stay aware of your enemies. Munchers' enemies are called Troggles. Troggles like to make a Muncher's life miserable by rearranging the board or eating them. The higher the level, the more Troggles you'll encounter.
Step4
Protect yourself. Occasionally a safety square will appear to protect you from Troggle monsters. These little havens appear as four white rectangles in the corner of a square, and if a Troggle enters, it dies (however, it is quickly replaced). But be careful because safety squares are random and may disappear as quickly as they appeared.
Step5
Enjoy the "Great Moments in Muncher History," six scenes that are played after every third level.

Tips & Warnings

  • In each mode, a number is given and the Muncher must gobble down the numbers he craves, relative to that mode. For example, in the factors mode, the Muncher must munch all the factors of the given number.
  • There are five types of Troggles: Reggies (Trogglus normalus), which are a brick-red color and only move in a line except when there is a safety square in their path and they are redirected; Bashfuls (Trogglus timidus), which are blue-green and move randomly on the board except when approached by a Muncher; Helpers (Trogglus assistus), which are green and like Munchers eat the correct answers, which makes completing the level easier but makes it harder to earn points; Workers (Trogglus laborus), which are white and purple and they add new answers or change existing answers on the board; and Smarties (Trogglus smarticus), which are yellow with big teeth and are the most difficult to avoid because they constantly follow the Muncher.
