Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Wait until the baby is at least 12 months old to eat citrus fruits. A sensitivity to citrus acid that causes rashes is likely before the baby is a year old.
Step2
Watch for an allergic reaction or indications of sensitivity to citrus fruits. Allergic reactions are unlikely with citrus fruits, but include swelling in and around the mouth, rashes, nausea and vomiting. Sensitivity is indicated by diaper rashes or other rashes. These are fairly common in children under 12 months of age from the acidity of citrus fruits.
Step3
Cut the fruit into small pieces. They should be fingertip-sized. This reduces the likelihood that the baby will choke.
Step4
Consider mixing it in with another food. Citrus juice is bitter, and some babies don't care for foods with a bitter taste. For instance, mixing it in with yogurt makes baby more likely to enjoy citrus fruit. Make sure it is mixed with a food that the baby has tried before. If there is an allergic reaction, you will know it is the citrus fruit that caused it.
Step5
Note any stomach sensitivities. Since citrus fruits are acidic, a baby with reflux or other stomach issues, or those who are prone to diaper rash, are best waiting to try them. Citrus fruits may upset the baby's stomach.
