How to Know the Rules of Badminton

Badminton is a game where you volley a shuttlecock back and forth over a net. A shuttlecock is either made with a feather tail and cork tip or plastic tail with a rubber tip. You play on a court, either 44 feet long by 17 feet wide for singles or 44 feet long by 20 feet wide for doubles and with a net that is 5 feet high. Read on to know the rules of badminton.

Instructions

  1. General Rules

    • 1

      Realize that touching the net with your racket in badminton gets your serve or volley disqualified, as stated in the rules.

      Know that resting the birdie on or carrying it on the racket is not allowed in the rules of badminton.

      Hit the net on the way across during play. This is permitted and play may continue.

    • 4

      Recognize that reaching over the net to hit the shuttlecock is not allowed in badminton.

    Serving Rules

    • 5

      Toss a coin or spin the racket to determine who serves first in badminton.

    • 6

      Serve diagonally across the court for it to be a legal serve.

    • 7

      Contact the birdie with the racket below the waist on a serve.

    • 8

      Stay on your side of the court in your serving area until the serve is made.

Tips & Warnings

  • Scoring is only possible on your serve in badminton.
