It is very important to care for your stoneware in the proper manner. Stoneware, which is made of natural clay that has been kiln fired at more than 2000 degrees, needs special care and cleaning to maintain. Good quality stoneware will heat and cook evenly. Here is how to care for and clean your stoneware.

From Quick Guide: Bakeware
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Stoneware
  • Non-stick vegetable oil
  • Nylon scraper or brush
  1. Step 1

Soak a new piece of stoneware in hot water to clean it.

  2. Step 2

Season your stoneware the first few times that you use it with non-stick vegetable spray or vegetable oil. Once it has been seasoned, it will not be necessary to re-season your stoneware.

  3. Step 3

Scrape off any food residue using a nylon kitchen brush or scraper.

  4. Step 4

Wash your stoneware with hot water after it has cooled down to room temperature.

  5. Step 5

Deep clean your stoneware occasionally by mixing 3 tbsp. water with ½ cup of baking soda. Spread the pasty mixture on the stoneware and allow it to stay there for 20 minutes. Scrape off any remaining mixture with a nylon scraper and rinse with hot water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stoneware is safe to use in an oven, convection oven, microwave or freezer.
  • Never put any stoneware in a dishwasher, it will be damaged.
  • Never use soap on stoneware. It will leave a soap residue and make your next dish taste like detergent. If you clean your stoneware with soap, you will remove the seasoning and your foods will stick, so you will need to re-season your cookware.

on 5/15/2008 Stay away from aerosol sprays. The propellants used in the spray will eventually eat away at your stoneware. Stick w/ your favorite oil and brush on w/ a basting brush.
