Let the person participate in preparing for the party only let them think the party is for someone else. This works very well if you have two birthdays that are close together. You can let them think it is someone else's party until the time of the party. They may be suspicious but you can carry it off.

Tell the person all the reasons why you can't give them a birthday party this year. There may have been deaths in the family, or your spouse is unemployed, or you have been sick. Just make sure they are valid reasons why you can't possibly throw them a party.

Make sure you have the party after their birthday and celebrate their birthday when it arrives with some presents and a cake. This should definitely get them to believe that there isn't any way they are having a party.

Be sure the invitations tell people that this is a surprise and if they call to RSVP not to say anything to the person the party is for if they should answer the phone. Invitees are usually the ones who will give the party away, unintentionally of course.

Plan for the person to be away the day of the party so you can prepare without the chance of them walking in on the preparations. Enlist the help of family or friends to ensure that they will not be back early. Only when everyone is there do you want to have the person to arrive.

Yell "surprise!" and make sure you have your camera ready. The expressions on the faces of some of the people who are surprised are priceless. You don't want to miss out after all the work you've gone to for the best surprise birthday party.

Surprise parties are great. Not easy to hide though, if you're really close to the birthday boy/girl.
