Pro Tools is the industry standard in audio production software. One of the reasons it has been adopted by so many users is because it is user friendly while offering tons of features. A good setup for a Pro Tools session will help a recording session run smoothly. Here is how you can quickly and easily set up a Pro Tools session and start recording.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open Pro Tools. When you open the program, you will be greeted by a blank screen. Go to "File" at the top of the screen and select "New Session." This will open a window in which you will adjust your settings for the session.

  2. Step 2

Enter the name you want to use the save the session in the "Save As" box. Select where you want to save the session from the drop down menu. It is best to create a new folder to save the session in. Pro Tools will automatically create folders for audio files, fade files and more in the same directory where you save the session.

  3. Step 3

Select your session parameters. You can change what type of files your recorded audio will be, the sample rate and bit depth of your session, and what I/O settings to use. For your audio file type, .WAV will allow you the most compatibility between MAC and PC, while .AIF is considered more professional by some. If you are not sure on sample rate and bit depth, 44.1 kHz and 16 bit are standard CD settings and fairly safe, although you can use higher settings for better resolution.

  4. Step 4

Add a master fader to your track. This will let you control the overall level of the session. Go to the "Track" menu and select "New." In the drop down menu, choose the master fader option. You can add inserts like a limiter to your master fader.

  5. Step 5

Make a click track. Create a new track like in Step 4, but choose an audio track this time instead. When you have your track, name it click and add the "Click" plugin on an insert. This will let you set a metronome for your performers to play to.

  6. Step 6

Create tracks for your session. You can create audio and MIDI tracks to fit what you are recording. Name these tracks for their respective instruments and you are ready to start recording.
