Step into a classroom where fair discipline is the standard order of business, and you'll step into a classroom where learning takes place. Not only can the students benefit from a positive learning environment, but also the teacher and parents can feel less stress. Learning is a tough job without throwing in the added burden of disruptions resulting from unruly students.

From Quick Guide: Don't Spoil the Child (Much)
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read and follow all school policies regarding discipline. Treat all students the same. Be firm, friendly, consistent and fair in all matters pertaining to discipline.

  2. Step 2

Maintain a classroom routine. You can vary it slightly periodically to offset boredom, but let the students know that there are certain expectations they must meet daily.

  3. Step 3

Keep classroom rules simple. Post them in a prominent place in the classroom. If there are school-wide rules that all students should obey, post them as well. Periodically review the rules with students, especially if you feel trouble is brewing.

  4. Step 4

Remain calm with your students. You are the adult. You have the final say regarding discipline in your classroom, not the child.

  5. Step 5

Communicate with parents. If you feel there is a problem, be proactive—not reactive. Keep a copy of all written communication and a log of all verbal communication for your records.

  6. Step 6

Work with a colleague or administrator when necessary to troubleshoot discipline problems in your classroom. Remember to never discuss student behavior in public unless it's good behavior. Then you can brag about them all you want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never threaten a child. Act. Remove them from the classroom situation, and discuss the problem in private and away from other students.
