Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Carry a calorie counter guide with you. This will help you keep what you are eating in perspective. You can look something up if you aren't sure or you can log your calorie intake on the trip.
Step2
Ask for nutritional information at every place you eat. Many restaurants and most fast food establishments have nutritional printouts of the items on their menu. Don't be afraid to ask for one.
Step3
Resist the urge to pack snacks. This can be a little more difficult when travelling with children, as they will need something to snack on. Snack healthy! Take a cooler packed with bottled water, apples, string cheese and low fat granola or trail mix.
Step4
Order light. Use common sense when ordering off a menu. Don't have the cream sauces or breaded anything. Have a hearty salad with a couple of ounces of protein and a vinaigrette dressing.
Step5
Book a room with a kitchenette and cook for your family while you are on the road. This will save you not only calories, but money since you won't be eating out. Just find a local supermarket and get what you need there. You will not only save money, but you will know, just like at home, exactly what is going into (or not going into) your food.
Step6
Take advantage of hotel perks. Use the gym or swim laps in the pool. Take in a steam in the sauna.
Step7
Use nature to help you. Walk on the beach. Hike mountain trails. Explore city streets. Wherever you are going, there is an opportunity to get exercise and make it fun for the whole family.
