A sunshade can offer protection from harmful UV rays while you relax on your deck or patio. The shade it provides will help keep you cool and let you enjoy your summer days outside. Sunshades come in several different shapes and sizes and some offer great privacy in addition to shelter from the sun.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine where the sun is strongest during the hottest time of the day. This is the area you want to protect, unless you're planning to use the sunshade specifically to create privacy. In that case, choose the most exposed portion of your deck.

  2. Step 2

Install the hardware that comes with your sunshade. In most cases, sunshades come with brackets. Measure and space the brackets carefully before installing them. Be sure to mount brackets in a stable place.

  3. Step 3

Snap the shade into the bracket. Use the pulley to move the shade up or down. This kind of shade can be used to cover patio doors inside or out, on decks or porches.

  4. Step 4

Consider other options. A sail-like sunshade is less permanent and offers protection anywhere, provided you have poles, trees, or beams to tie it to.

  5. Step 5

Installing an awning over a deck or patio is also a great way to create shade. Awnings are typically more expensive then other sunshades and may require a professional for installation.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check your measurements twice before installing. Use a level to create a straight line and help you mount your brackets evenly.
